FROM THE SECRETARY: Celebrating Diversity With the AUA: Our Most Important Focus Issue, With Bonus “Airplane Issue” Content

By: John D. Denstedt, MD, FRCSC, FACS, FCAHS, Editor, AUANews, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

Welcome to the 3rd annual “Celebrating Diversity with the AUA” focus issue of AUANews. It is my privilege to share with you important content relating to global diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in our urological community. These articles will inform us all in the present and then become part of an important foundational collection of diversity articles to use as resources for years to come. Please visit www.AUANews.net to re-read the 2021 and 2022 diversity focus issue articles.

This issue would not have been possible without the AUA’s Chief Diversity Officer and Guest Editor, Dr. Larissa Bresler, and Guest Editors Dr. Justin S. Han, Dr. Lourdes Guerrios-Rivera, and Dr. Michelle Jo Semins. These Guest Editors were instrumental in inviting many of this issue’s authors to present a global perspective on the evolution of DEI in urology. Thank you all for your time, knowledge, resources, and dedication to improving urology.

I also thank our expert peer review board for this issue (see Figure). These experts were selected to review articles for this issue based on their expertise in DEI and health equity. We held an open call for submissions for this issue, and we received many excellent manuscripts as a result. Those accepted for publication are showcased here in this issue. I appreciate the thoughtful peer review efforts of this board.

As I near the end of my term as the Secretary of the AUA, I reflect on an important part of that role – my term as Editor-in-Chief of AUANews. I am proud of the growth of this publication, but I am especially proud of this annual focus issue and its impact on improving our specialty.

This April 2023 AUANews also serves as our “airplane issue.” Read premium AUA2023 meeting content previews to get a taste of what you’ll see on the big stage at the end of this month. After our virtual meetings in 2020 and 2021, I will never take for granted again the opportunity to gather together in person. I look forward to seeing many of you in Chicago for the best urological meeting in the world. Pack this issue in your carry-on bag and read it on the plane to prepare for the best meeting programming yet at #AUA23!
