SPECIALTY SOCIETIES: Research on Calculus Kinetics Society Meeting at AUA

By: Vernon Pais, MD, Immediate Past President, ROCK Society Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, New Hampshire; Jody Lulich, PhD, DVM, ROCK Society President, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

The Research on Calculus Kinetics Society (R.O.C.K. Society) is pleased to continue our affiliation with the American Urological Association and will host a specialty meeting during the AUA Annual Meeting. We invite you to attend the R.O.C.K. Society Meeting at the 2023 AUA meeting in Chicago on Monday, May 1, from 8 am-12 pm at the McCormick Place Convention Center.

The R.O.C.K. Meeting brings together the best and brightest in the specialty to debate and discuss the latest developments in stone care and research. The R.O.C.K. session provides an opportunity for scientific assessment and dialogue among researchers, physicians, and health care providers involved in kidney stone management. The meeting includes state-of-the-art developments in stone management, as well as discussion and review of traditional and emerging methods of treatment.

This year’s meeting will address medical and surgical management, nutrition therapies, and clinical conundrums. In addition, the meeting will explore the origins of the specialty and will look into the future and provide some advice for preparation of what’s to come.

Past President Dean Assimos will open the meeting with a look at the “Lost Art of Open Stone Surgery,” followed by an interesting discussion on animal models with presentations by Jody Lulich, Eva Furrow, and Emily Coffey, all from the University of Minnesota.

Always a highlight of any stone discussion are medical management and nutritional elements. Kelly Healy will uncover Myth Busting Diet Recommendations, followed by a lively debate between Kris Penniston and Michael Borofsky on Empirical vs Targeted Nutrition Therapy. Rounding out the discussion will be in-depth discussion on water, magnesium, and bisphosphonates.

Joseph Crivelli will dive into the Disparities in Socioeconomic Status and Stone Care, presenting an interesting and often-overlooked aspect of patient care.

The next session will review intriguing Clinical Conundrums and How the Experts Navigate Nuance and Conquer Catastrophe. Some of the topics to be presented focus on large infectious stone, ureteral injury, pleural injury post-percutaneous nephrolithotomy, the forgotten stent, and asymptomatic stones.

Our final session of the morning looks ahead, and Gregory Tasian promises that The Future is Brighter than Ever and gives advice on how to prepare.

We are thrilled to gather some of the best minds in the specialty and enthusiastically invite all of our colleagues who have an interest in kidney stone disease to attend this unique educational experience and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and discuss with the experts. Each session will include ample time for questions to ensure an open dialogue with speakers and attendees.

The R.O.C.K. Society is a multidisciplinary group of investigators dedicated to unraveling the pathophysiological events of kidney stone formation, preventing the development of new stones or growth of existing calculi, identifying demographic factors and diseases associated with the development of kidney stones, and optimizing stone removal.
