SPECIALTY SOCIETIES: Society for the Study of Male Reproduction at AUA2023

By: Jim Hotaling, MD, MS, FECSM, University of Utah, Salt Lake City; Matt Coward, MD, FAC, Atlantic Reproductive Medicine, Raleigh, North Carolina, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

I am very excited to announce the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR) program for the Annual Meeting at the AUA. This program will take place on Sunday April 30, from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. in S100A at the Chicago Convention Center. The program for this year will be “Male Reproduction in the Next Generation: Innovation From the Rising Stars of the Field.” This program has been put together by Dr Matt Coward and will include highlights on male reproductive basic science, clinical and educational innovations in male reproduction, new research advances through public policy, and a session on wellness.

This program was purposely designed to showcase innovative new faculty in andrology, all of whom have made substantial contributions to the field through a number of different areas of research. Our goal here is to allow the broader andrology and urological communities to see the work of these investigators as they work to advance the field of andrology.

This program will have many outstanding speakers with a session on basic science for early-career investigators to showcase their groundbreaking work. This will include talks by Dr Scott Gabrielson and Dr Ryan Flannigan covering the role of epigenetics in male reproduction and future therapies for spermatogenic failure.

We will have another section on clinical and education innovation where we will examine access to care for underserved populations, discover office-based microsurgery, and evaluate direct-to-consumer andrology tests with Dr Denise Asafu-Adjei, Dr Sevann Helo, and Dr Josh Halpern. The SSMR President, Dr Jim Hotaling, will discuss our newly revamped Andrology Match in this session as well.

We will then have a session on how research advances the field through public policy by Dr Jason Hedges, Dr Juan Andino, Dr Jim Dupree, and Joyce Reinecke, JD. This session will examine fertility preservation and the role of both basic science and health services research as they relate to public policy.

Finally, we will have a series of speakers on how individuals can take charge of wellness and be proactive in avoiding burnout. We are excited to have 3 special guests from outside the SSMR, Dr Nishant Patel, Dr Phil Pierorazio, and Dr Angie Smith, each lending their expertise in this arena, followed by a panel discussion by all these speakers.

All levels of urology trainees, including medical students and graduate students, are strongly encouraged to attend the SSMR Symposium. We are excited to continue our partnership with the SMSNA (Sexual Medicine Society of North America) to cosponsor the joint SSMR & SMSNA Traveling Fellowship Program for current urology residents who are interested in our respective fields. Additionally, we are proud to continue to offer the Arnold Belker Traveling Fellowship to current reproductive urology fellows.

We look forward to all of you joining us in Chicago for what will prove to be an impactful meeting where we showcase the best and brightest of the new investigators in our field as well as look at innovations in basic science research, clinical advances, and public policy, and conclude with a timely session on wellness.

We will also highlight our newly revamped Andrology Match process, which thus far has functioned to provide the applicants a fair and comprehensive process for reviewing and selecting their optimal fellowship program.
