SPECIALTY SOCIETIES: Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, April 28, 2023

By: Hunter Wessells, MD, FACS, GURS President; Benjamin Breyer, MD FACS, GURS Secretary/Treasurer | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

Please join us at the AUA for the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS) scientific session (Friday, April 28, 2023). This educational program highlights the diverse clinical challenges faced by the reconstructive urologist. From prosthetics to buried penis to gender-affirming surgery and trauma, our exciting and interactive program will engage practitioners throughout the spectrum of practice, from general urologists to the most specialized GURS fellowship-trained surgeons. In keeping with tradition, there will be ample time for audience participation, discourse, and exchange.

The Presidential Address kicks off the morning with highlights of the day’s program and the year ahead. Next, Mr David Ralph, BSc, MS, FRCS, will deliver the Brantley Scott Lecture on Challenges in Inflatable Penile Prosthesis. GURS members are often called on to treat the most complex prosthetic cases. Mr Ralph will address scenarios including implants after priapism or Peyronie’s disease, post-infection, and in transgender men. Next, we have a practical case-based session on genitourinary trauma that will be rooted in novel and nascent evidence. We will cover primary realignment after pelvic fracture urethral injury, embolization for kidney trauma, and external genital trauma care. The session ends with a special guest speaker who will discuss the Stop the Bleed initiative and the epidemic of gun violence. Dr Uzoma Anele will wrap up the morning reviewing the latest trials in reconstructive urology.

After an industry-sponsored lunch, Dr Polina Reyblat will moderate a session of preeminent leaders in gender-affirming surgery to discuss vaginoplasty techniques and complication management. Next, Dr Alex Vanni will review the newly updated Urethral Stricture AUA Guideline. Our urethral stricture section then focuses on female urethral stricture with a talk by Dr Dmitriy Nikolavsky on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and diagnosis. Tamsin Greenwell, MB, ChB, MD, FRCS, then will lead an exciting debate with reconstructive leaders on the best approach to treat female urethral stricture.

The afternoon continues with a session on buried penis moderated by Dr Francesca Monn. The session features updates on buried penis staging, the use of skin flaps, and abdominoplasty, and ends with a panel discussion of challenging cases. Next, Dr Lindsay Hampson will moderate a session on functional urology and incontinence. The session will conclude with a debate on the merits and indications for urodynamics when treating men with urinary incontinence.

The afternoon concludes with an update on GURS initiatives including the Women of GURS group and the Young Reconstructive Urologist’s Committee. Finally, please join us in Seattle, Washington, September 7-10 2023, for the third annual GURS Academic Congress. Following up on the tremendous success of our Athens and Montreal meetings, the GURS Academic Congress 2023 will be an incredible opportunity for idea exchange, networking, and advancing the academics of our field.
