SPECIALTY SOCIETIES: The Society of Urologic Oncology Meeting at AUA2023
By: Daniel W. Lin, MD, University of Washington, Seattle | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023
After a successful in-person 2022 AUA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, we are excited to get together in Chicago for the 2023 Annual Meeting. The Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) meeting at the AUA will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 and will start with a combined morning session with the Society for Basic Urologic Research (SBUR) followed by the traditional SUO meeting in the afternoon.
The combined SBUR/SUO meeting (Saturday, April from 8:00-11:50 am) will be led by Drs Shawn Lupold (president of the SBUR) and Dan Lin with an overall theme addressing “Cancer Genomics and the Tumor Microenvironment.” Experts in the field will speak on various aspects related to genomics, precision medicine, and tumor biology, addressing themes that are relevant in prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer. This year’s Don Coffey Lectureship will be delivered by Dr Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The afternoon SBUR breakout sessions (1:00-4:00 pm) will address: (1) inflammation and tissue microenvironments and (2) emerging pathways and technology.
The afternoon session of the SUO meeting, which begins at 12:25 pm, is chaired by Drs Zachary Hamilton and Stacey Loeb. As in years past, we will begin the meeting with the presentation of several awards. This year’s recipients include Dr Michael Cookson from University of Oklahoma as the recipient of the SUO Medal, Dr Simpa Salami from University of Michigan as the recipient of the Young Investigator Award, and Dr Gennady Bratslavsky from SUNY Upstate Medical University for the Distinguished Service Award. This year’s Whitmore Award will be given to Dr Mike Koch, who will also deliver the Willet F. Whitmore Jr Lecture. This is one of the highest awards given by the SUO and recognizes significant contributions to the field of urologic oncology. Dr Koch is the chairman and professor of urology at Indiana University School of Medicine, having served in that role since 1998. Dr Koch has held multiple leadership positions nationally, including as trustee and president of the American Board of Urology, chair of the Residency Review Committee for Urology for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, chair of the American Board of Urology Examination Committee, and president of Society of Urology Chairpersons and Program Directors and Society of University Urologists. Dr Koch has been a pioneer in the field of urologic oncology, in particular in bladder cancer, urinary diversions, and prostate cancer. All award winners have made and continue to make significant contributions to urologic oncology and the SUO. We are extremely proud of these SUO members!
The remainder of the SUO afternoon session will begin with a session on kidney cancer and discuss topics from management of metastatic non–clear cell renal cell carcinoma to issues surrounding partial nephrectomy, including its role in cytoreduction and surgical complications related to this procedure. This session will be followed by a focus on urothelial cancer, addressing tumor markers in bladder cancer, neoadjuvant immunotherapy for muscle-invasive disease, and a lecture that will specifically focus on optimizing care of bladder cancer in women. The prostate cancer session will address racial equity in prostate cancer and provide an update of current clinical trials in prostate cancer, in addition to having what promises to be a controversial debate on renaming Gleason 6 prostate cancer. The SUO remains committed to continuing to address issues of survivorship and professional development. To that end, the afternoon program will end with a session that addresses new guidelines for sexual health care and LGBTQIA+ care in prostate cancer, genetic counseling in urological cancer, and promoting wellness for urologic oncologists.
