WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: A Tribute to AUA Secretary John Denstedt: A Triple Threat and More

By: John W. Davis, MD, FACS, The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

John Denstedt is finishing a memorable term as secretary of the AUA. He will be remembered for organizing a fantastic set of Annual Meetings, and the added challenges of having to pivot 2 of them to virtual formats due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The editors of the 3 AUA journals have the added benefit of working with Dr Denstedt in his role as editor of AUANews and seeing the many changes he’s made in the scope and volume of content. As the 3 editors were asked to give their own memories and accolades, I will emphasize my piece on acknowledging my 2 main observations of Dr Denstedt: (1) a true “scholar on the road,” and (2) a master of the boardroom agenda.

For the former, Dr Denstedt is a true triple threat—traveling to many meetings to give talks, networking with urologists around the globe, and leading scholarly publications. As his AUA profile summarizes, he has been honored with more than 400 guest professorships, and it seems like even more than that. Any meeting can benefit from his participation as a state-of-the-art lecturer, panelist, or abstract moderator. He networks well with the hosts and attendees and keeps a large database of urologists with their expertise as future speakers and/or peer reviewers (see Figure). At this point, I think I’ve been on international meeting faculty with him in multiple continents and it’s always a relief to see a familiar face. He was a senior editor for Journal of Endourology and has used that experience to move AUANews in the right direction. Of course, the subspecialty updates are a strength of AUANews, but I also enjoy the various meeting and society updates and his signature concept, “Out of Office,” as a great way to feature urologists pursuing their hobbies and interests outside of work.

C, Enjoying the faculty dinner with AUA Secretary-elect David Penson and AUA Assistant Secretary Jorge Gutiérrez-Aceves.

But mostly, I admire Dr Denstedt for his work on various boards of directors. He served as the Endourology Society treasurer, and I enjoyed how he participated in the meeting, asked good questions, and helped that group navigate key decisions such as future venues and meeting hosts. Although an endourologist by trade, I always felt he was a strong advocate for robotic surgery development and education. As AUA Secretary, he fits in so well with the Board to run the agenda and get the most out of the speakers. I had the privilege of presenting our progress with JU Open Plus to the board, and you knew he would have a set of tough questions for us to address, while keeping the meeting moving on time. The experience is sort of hard to put into words. He doesn’t need to raise a voice or talk over others—he has a quiet but focused tone, and he gets everyone’s attention by the high degree of preparation he has done leading up to the meeting. He’s a great role model for this skill set.

I will conclude by thanking Dr Denstedt for his many years of AUA service. With the advancements in AUANews, the additions of JU Open Plus and Urology Practice®, and the many accomplishments of our flagship publication, The Journal of Urology®, the AUA has a well-diversified portfolio of publications to enhance urological education and science. These 4 publications will continue to cascade articles back and forth, and find a good home for most scholarly and scientifically sound articles.
