WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: Dr John Denstedt

By: Ronald P. Kaufman Jr, MD, FACS, Albany Medical College, New York | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

I first came to know John when I was selected by the Northeastern Section of the AUA for the inaugural AUA Leadership Class in 2004, which happened to coincide with John’s presidency of the Northeastern Section of the AUA (see Figure). Because of my membership in the AUA Leadership Class, I became active in the AUA nationally as Chairman of the Coding and Reimbursement Committee. At the same time, I was a member of the Northeastern Section Board of Directors, first as Secretary, then President-elect, then President, and finally as Past President. During these same years John was on the AUA Board of Directors as the Northeastern Section Representative and was on the Northeastern Section Board of Directors. Consequently, we spent a lot of time working together at numerous Northeastern Section Board of Directors meetings. Between national AUA Leadership/Health Policy meetings and the Northeastern Section Board of Directors meetings, I was able to observe and learn from his quiet yet effective leadership style. As a bonus, he and I became very friendly professionally and socially at various National AUA and Northeastern Section AUA events. As such, I feel grateful that I have had the opportunity to know John as a mentor, colleague, and friend.
