WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: From the Wood to the Gold

By: Mario Basulto, MD, MSc, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry—Western University, London, Ontario, Canada | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

In the next lines, I will reflect on the lessons and insights I have learned from Dr John Denstedt, for whom no introduction is needed.

Dr Denstedt is someone whom I admire for his tenacity, hard work, and creativity. He is an inspiration to me, with his ability to tackle challenges head-on and still maintain a relaxed demeanor. Through his experiences, he has taught me that anything worthwhile takes time and hard work, and that effective planning is key to achieving one’s goals.

One of the key lessons I learned from Dr Denstedt is the importance of focusing on the most relevant things, which is fundamental for smart working. He has a unique ability to pick out what is important and just let go what is not, which allows him to achieve maximum effectiveness in his work. This is something that I have started to implement in my own life, and I have already seen the positive impact it has had.

Another valuable insight that I gained from Dr Denstedt is that your word is your bond. He is someone whose word is worth and always follows through on his commitments. This is something highly appreciated in today’s world, and I am grateful to have learned the importance of this lesson from someone who embodies trustworthiness.

One particular conversation that stands out in my mind is when Dr Denstedt and I discussed the challenges of starting a medical practice. I was worried about starting a practice in my home country after having the privilege of training in a well-resourced environment, but he put my fears to rest. Dr Denstedt shared his own journey of building the department of urology from the ground up, even starting with a surgical table made of wood. I was eagerly listening while astonished by the several awards hanging on the wall, most notably the Gold Cystoscope Award, Dr. Denstedt being the first Canadian to ever receive this distinguished award. This story demonstrated to me the power of perseverance and hard work, and I will always remember it as a testament to what can be achieved through determination and resilience.

In conclusion, I am grateful to have the ongoing opportunity to learn from Dr Denstedt, whose guidance has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I will always strive to embody his lessons and insights as I navigate my future endeavors.
