WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: John Denstedt

By: Raju Thomas, MD, FACS, FRCS, MHA, Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

Having known Dr John Denstedt for many, many years, and having been through his outstanding tenure as the AUA Secretary, which is perhaps the most important position at the AUA, it is easy for me to reflect upon the tremendous contributions and value that he has brought to this position. “Above and beyond” is how I would describe John’s tenure as the AUA Secretary.

As the AUA Secretary, he was in the limelight, especially during a rare event like a global pandemic. His ability to work with a solid team and his ability to change the annual programs to reflect the educational needs of urologists around the world was very evident. John was nimble enough to move from the regular format to a virtual format with his usual calm demeanor.

Over the past 4 years, John has received nothing but accolades. He has really been a worldwide phenomenon for the AUA, given his willingness to travel to parts of the world not previously visited by other secretaries reluctant to do so. These travels were mission critical in maintaining our liaison as the largest urological organization in the world, building relationships and bridges. For this service, the AUA will be forever indebted.

While I was President of the AUA, the scientific portion of the AUA’s hybrid meeting in New Orleans was well managed by John. Notably, his scientific program attracted registrations which far exceeded our expectations. John’s high standard of work and programming has indeed “set the bar” for future secretaries.

While John is stepping down, it is very important to recognize his accomplishments, his caliber of work, and his indefatigable diligence to serve our organization. John will be sorely missed not just as the AUA Secretary, but also as a valuable contributor to the AUA Board of Directors. May his “flame” continue to burn.
