WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: Pearls of Wisdom from JD: “Should be OK!”
By: Alp Sener, MD, PhD, FRCSC, Keith & Leanne Lavergne Chair and Chief Urology, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023
John Denstedt’s contributions and dedication to the AUA, his boundless mentorship to his colleagues and students, as well as his pioneering leadership locally at Western University have been tremendous. His accolades and accomplishments as Secretary of the AUA have clearly advanced our Society’s mission to be more inclusive, innovative, and growth oriented. Prior to taking on this tremendous role for the AUA, John was Chairman of Surgery at Western University. During his tenure of over a decade, John made innumerable contributions to our growing department which have led to it being positioned as one of the fastest growing, most innovative, and academically productive units in Canada. As Chairman, he spearheaded surgical educational and simulation initiatives, created a stellar Master of Surgery graduate program, and initiated numerous international outreach efforts which have all elevated our departmental and institutional standing on the world stage. I first met John during my urology elective at Western University in London, Canada, over 23 years ago. Over the years John has become a constant supporter of my career throughout residency and fellowship, and then with my recruitment back to Western on faculty. I have experienced firsthand the dedication to his students, to the multitude of faculty whom he continues to mentor despite his busy workload, as well as his drive to promote the careers of junior faculty members so that they, too, can gain from the experience and exposure to leaders across various subspecialties in urology. He has always shown me respect, kindness, and unconditional support, and has been an endless well of wisdom for many of the challenges that I faced as a surgeon-scientist and as Chairman of our division. His accessibility, paired with his effortless ability to distill complex situations to simple, surmountable blocks, has helped countless pioneers in urology achieve great things. For this guidance, we are all forever grateful. John’s optimistic approach to many of life’s challenges in and out of the OR has led to a widely used colloquialism coined by John many years ago—“Should be OK!” This familiar phrase is now used widely by almost all current and previous trainees and colleagues of John’s at Western and has spread its way across many Canadian institutions like wildfire. In essence, it means: all will be good, carry on as planned. Somehow, there is a calming effect of saying it aloud when things are not going as one would have hoped, but I think the magic in the words seems to cure all ailments. I feel very proud to have had the opportunity to have John as a mentor and colleague over the years. John Denstedt’s pioneering vision and dedication to all that he puts his mind to has inspired many of us to continue to strive for excellence in our leadership, clinical, and academic pursuits. Thank you, John!
