WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: The Beating Heart of the American Urological Association
By: Craig Niederberger, MD, FACS, College of Medicine and College of Engineering, University of Illinois at Chicago | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023
I was extraordinarily surprised and pleased that Dr Denstedt asked me to take the reins of “Have You Read?” in AUANews. I was so impressed with how he had grown the publication in its scope and depth, and I knew that the “Have You Read?” column was one of the most popular and useful for urologists in practice. Dr Shoskes had done a fantastic job, and his shoes to fill were enormous. It was such an honor to be asked by Dr Denstedt to take the mantle of a column that I had grown to enjoy and to personally use.
When I was much younger (in residency), I thoroughly enjoyed receiving and opening what was then a slimmer version of AUANews today. It contained news of academic activity and the goings-on of import in the world of urology and the impact on our patients. During Dr Denstedt’s tenure, this publication has grown enormously. It’s thick with clinical information, relevant research, news about the AUA’s activities, useful information about the business of urology, human interest stories, and one of my favorites, what urologists do for fun in “Out of Office.” (Curtis Nickel’s piece on motorcycles is an absolute must read.) For me, AUANews is the beating heart of the AUA and my fellow urologists in it.
The readership of AUANews rivals that of any substantial news outlet or journal. About 14,000 North American readers such as myself enjoy a print version on our desks to open, peruse, and enjoy every month. About 24,000 across the globe read an online version, and it’s translated into Spanish and Portuguese. And Dr Denstedt was responsible for the remarkable growth of AUANews that continues to establish the relevance of our AUA as foundational for urological care today and for the future.
What did I learn from Dr Denstedt? From my perspective as a columnist and one who has witnessed the growth of this beating heart of the AUA, AUANews, well, first to say yes if asked to do something wonderful. But seriously, if you focus your passions and talents on communicating the breadth and depth of activities of such a remarkable organization as the AUA to the world, you can make a huge difference. His tenure leading AUANews into the future has been truly inspiring.
