WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: What I Learned From Dr Denstedt
By: Eduardo Gonzalez-Cuenca, MD, Western University London, Ontario, Canada | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023
When tasked with putting on paper what Dr Denstedt has taught me, words fall short. Notwithstanding, I will endeavor to describe his remarkable mentorship and where better to start than with my first impression of one of the greatest urologists of the modern day. I met him on my very first trip to Canada where he struck me as an incredibly down-to-earth, friendly, and welcoming person. These qualities are often underrated but should never be underestimated.
In the operating room, he always takes an avid interest in the learning curve of residents and fellows, providing enough autonomy while at the same time demonstrating practical skills, tips, and tricks of the trade. He goes above and beyond this as he is consistently eager to teach efficiency and practicality within procedures so as to make the best use of time.
In terms of academia, he delves further than regular knowledge; he is always providing an interesting insight into the management of patients and explores the best treatment options as well as how to get there. In clinic, his ability to remember even the smallest details from all of his patients never ceases to amaze me. He continuously maintains a top-standard interaction with them, including those patients who do not frequent the clinic on a regular basis. I will always associate him with the phrase, “it should be fine,” which, upon its use, is a sturdy marker that the patient outcome will indeed be fine. His uncanny ability to assess a patient’s situation with this phrase has to date never been wrong.
As an innate researcher, Dr Denstedt never fails to take active steps toward innovation so as to maximize the treatment outcomes. Moreover, he uses his expertise to further your development of a more critical point of view when assessing new ideas or research questions. His methodology has been fundamental to my ability to discern just how applicable certain new ideas may be.
As occupied as Dr Denstedt can be during the regular week, he manages his schedule to be available and provide care for his patients while at the same time staying on top of his personal commitments. He has been a true example for me in terms of his work-life balance. Dr Denstedt not only has shown me new procedural techniques or clinical pathways, but also has mentored me to become a better surgeon in every way that one can aspire.
