WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: What I Learned From Dr Denstedt

By: D. Robert Siemens, MD, FRCSC, Editor, The Journal of Urology®, Queen’s University, Kingston General Hospital, Ontario, Canada | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

It was an honor to be asked to reflect on Dr John Denstedt’s leadership at the AUA as his remarkable term as Secretary ends at AUA2023 in Chicago. Although that position is incredibly multifaceted, one of his legacies will undoubtedly be his fortification of AUANews to become central to the Association’s mandate of speaking to membership, and the global urological community, as the “voice of urology.” As Editor of AUANews, he’s expanded its scope to include diverse insights and experiences of opinion leaders, educators, researchers, trainees, and members at large. He’s worked with the editorial and publishing teams of the other AUA family of journals to envision a cohesive and complementary enterprise (not at all commonplace in scholarly publishing).

But one shouldn’t have been surprised by this tenacity and outward vision when it comes to these accomplishments as Secretary of the AUA, including the focus on academic communication and collaboration advancing our field. As a fellow Canadian, I can tell you this is pure John Denstedt. He has educated and mentored a generation (or two) of urologists in the art and science of endourology across our country. However, this passion to progress this knowledge and these skills has seemed to always have an expansive, international vision. He has circled the globe as a visiting professor, lecturer, and course director to advance contemporary stone management. He’s contributed to the editorial board and reviewing teams of (it seems) every major urological journal, in multiple jurisdictions, over the years. And he has done this consistently throughout his career with a preternatural calmness and generosity that are, well, pure John Denstedt.
