WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: What I Learned From Dr Denstedt

By: Larissa Bresler, MD, DABMA, Loyola University Medical Center, Hines, Illinois, Edward Hines Jr VA Hospital, Hines, Illinois | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

Despite being an internationally renowned scholar and a multiple professional awards winner, Dr Denstedt is a humble, soft-spoken, and personable physician who was the first person to welcome me (electronically) to the AUA leadership shortly after I accepted my position as the inaugural Chief Diversity Officer and D&I Committee Chair. I finally met him in person during the fall AUA board of directors meeting last October, where he shared some words of wisdom with me in regard to being the AUA Abstract Review Team Leader: “It’s easy being a team leader when the reviewers agree, it’s when they don’t agree—let’s just say it becomes interesting.” As an AUA Secretary, Dr Denstedt reviewed hundreds of abstracts and managed numerous section leaders, so his sage advice was appreciated. I think what he meant was to take this work seriously and carefully consider each diverging opinion. I think Dr Denstedt represents a bright example of servant leadership: he puts the needs of his team above his own and helps his team grow. I experienced this firsthand working with him on the AUA Celebrating Diversity AUANews issue. He took the time to attend the zoom meeting with our 3 guest editors from Egypt and followed through each promised suggestion despite his very busy schedule. He let each editorial team member shine and encouraged us to pursue our ideas. He is quick to respond and is very skilled in email etiquette: you read his emails with a smile, even if he is asking you to do something. In summary, Dr Denstedt is a very effective leader, not just because of the tripled content of the AUANews publications or his skilled annual meeting work, but because he inspires others to do better. I look up to him and am grateful for his leadership.
