WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: What I Learned From Dr Denstedt

By: Kurt McCammon, MD; Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

A challenge it is to put into words all I have learned from Dr John Denstedt. John’s steady leadership, creatively thoughtful approach to problem-solving, dedication to excellence in patient care, and a true heart of humanitarianism all contribute to the difference he has made through the AUA and have deeply impacted me personally.

As Secretary during the COVID crisis, John adapted unflappably to rapid and often unpredictable changes in meeting platforms. Travel restrictions from Canada to the U.S. never changed his resolve, and despite the challenges, he executed his duties with success and grace. He did it without complaint, and he got the work done with a smile and collegial attitude. So, what did I learn? I learned that although adversities happen, there are practical ways to turn difficult situations into positive outcomes. Despite the hardships the pandemic blasted around the world, John was instrumental in driving the success of the 2020 and 2021 AUA Annual Meeting programs both logistically and in high-quality educational content.

John’s accomplishments at the AUA are noteworthy and well documented. He leaves his leadership roles with a tremendous positive impact on the organizational leadership and membership. Impressively, during his leadership tenure, he continued to work selflessly to serve his own patients at home, and to improve urological care through teaching and training urologists at home and abroad.

John certainly embodies one of my favorite quotes, attributed to Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

John, thank you for your giving attitude, leadership, vision, and dedication, but most importantly, your friendship. I look forward to our continued friendship and collaboration in humanitarian medical work for years to come.

My warmest regards to you and Carolyn.
