WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: What I Learned From Dr Denstedt
By: Angela B. Smith, MD, MS, FACS, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023
To write an essay on what I learned from Dr Denstedt cannot be done without discussing leadership. In the past few years, I have reflected on the qualities of a good leader. In these reflections, I have come to realize that no single quality defines leadership; rather, the unique combination of various characteristics is what defines a leader’s impact. I believe that Dr Denstedt’s unique combination of characteristics is at the heart of how he leads and what he teaches others—including myself. He is a man who leads quietly with purpose, compassion, and the highest moral standards. He is an individual from whom I have learned many lessons.
I learned that one can lead authentically by embracing the person you are while holding your values steadfastly in all decisions. I learned that leaving ego at the door creates a clarity that leads to effective decision-making. I learned that active listening serves an invaluable purpose and builds your own empathy and happiness. I learned that the greatest joy comes from celebrating our differences rather than hiding them. I learned that one can both develop and cultivate meaningful relationships with your family while having passion for your job. I learned that you can be yourself and lead more effectively as a consequence. I learned that vulnerability and honesty develop trust. I learned that relationships are at the heart of all we do.
In the past 4 years, I have been privileged to call Dr Denstedt a mentor, leader, travel companion, and friend, and I consider myself fortunate. I try to embody his lessons daily—at home with my family and friends, and at work with my patients and colleagues. In all situations, I try to model authentic living through active listening, reflection, action, and purpose—and if and when I steer off this path, I’ll always know who to call to course correct.
