WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: What I Learned From Dr John Denstedt

By: Neil H. Baum, MD, Tulane Medical School, New Orleans, Louisiana | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023

I am honored to be invited to submit a testimonial about Dr John Denstedt’s contributions to medicine and our urological specialty. I will leave it to others to mention his awards, accolades, and achievements. However, I have had the opportunity to interact with Dr Denstedt in his role as Editor in Chief of AUANews. Dr Denstedt must be applauded for moving the publication from its focus on clinical urology to other nonclinical topics. Dr Denstedt has opened our minds to other areas that involve our attention regarding the world that we live in. For example, Dr Denstedt has been a pioneer in promoting publication about diversity, equality, and inclusion. This topic received little attention in urological publications before Dr Denstedt’s editorship of AUANews. Notably, he dedicated an entire issue to the topic of diversity, equality, and inclusion. Another area that has captured the attention of Dr Denstedt is the economics of a urology practice. Dr Denstedt understands that few urologists receive any education or training in the business of medicine. Consequently, this represents a void in the education of future urologists who will be managing multimillion-dollar practices. Dr Denstedt has welcomed articles on practice management and productivity. Finally, Dr Denstedt recognizes the role of health care policy and has encouraged our colleagues to participate in advocacy and the legislative process.

Since Dr Denstedt has been Editor in Chief, many colleagues and I will read the entire biweekly publication. He has moved the publication from a “throwaway” magazine to a valuable resource with content that is applicable to every practicing urologist.

So, what have I learned from Dr John Denstedt? I learned that it is possible to overcome the status quo in urology. We all have experienced the “not invented here” response to new ideas, innovations, and treatments that are added to the urologist’s armamentarium only to find that acceptance is denied because someone in a higher position deems it unworthy or not useful. Dr Denstedt has taken unpopular topics and provided print space to cover new horizons, even when the topics may not be popular or mainstream.

Dr Denstedt has created a team that has decision-making opportunities Dr Denstedt does not micromanage his staff. As a result, he has created a loyal staff who does not merely follow orders but uses their creative skills to generate a publication that is appreciated and enjoyed by the readership of AUANews. Practicing urologists who manage a team of employees would do well to emulate Dr Denstedt and develop a team with the goal of providing every patient a positive health care experience. If the urologists can do this, they will have a successful practice, happier patients, happier staff, and, yes, happier urologists who just might get home for dinner!

Congratulations, Dr Denstedt. You have been an example to all of your staff and your colleagues. Please continue to serve your colleagues.
