WHAT I LEARNED FROM DR DENSTEDT: Working With AUA Secretary Dr John Denstedt
By: Ronald Rabinowitz, MD, Historian, American Urological Association, University of Rochester Medical Center, New York | Posted on: 06 Apr 2023
As AUA Historian, I have worked with Dr John Denstedt for the past 4 years during his term as Secretary of the AUA. I have observed and learned how he uses his intelligence, thoughtfulness, personality, fairness, honesty, and organizational and leadership skills to accomplish tasks and advance and improve our renowned medical organization. But none of his accomplishments surprise me. I have known, observed, and worked with Dr Denstedt in other capacities as members of our joint organizations, the Northeastern Section of the AUA and the Canadian Urological Association. We have attended and actively participated in numerous meetings together for the past 30 years.
Dr Denstedt’s support of the William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History has been invaluable. He has actively supported the activities of the Didusch Museum at AUA Headquarters, and at the History Forum and History Exhibit at our Annual Meetings. At the 2017 Annual Meeting, he gave an excellent presentation on the history of kidney infections at the History Booth and contributed an accompanying article The Kidney — Infections to the publication Renal Retrospective.
As AUA Secretary, he has strongly supported the Historian’s participation at Section Secretaries Membership Council Meetings. As Editor of AUANews, he has expanded the editorship and significantly increased the content. His addition of the AUA Historian to the Editorial Staff as a Section Editor (From the History Committee: Taking a History) has increased the number of history contributions to AUANews. Dr Denstedt’s expansion of AUANews has offered our younger members and trainees greater opportunity to publish and participate with the AUA.
The William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History offers our deep gratitude to Dr Denstedt for his support, and congratulations for his significant contributions to our national organization and its membership.
