The New England-AUA annual meeting will be held at the picturesque Omni Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, September 7-9, 2023. A robust program has been assembled by the program scientific organizers, Drs Elodi Dielubanza and Peter Chang. We will have the honor of welcoming 3 outstanding and accomplished invited guests. The Leadbetter lectureship will be delivered by Dr Mark S. Litwin, The Fran and Ray Stark Foundation Chair in Urology, and Chair of Department of Urology at UCLA. Dr Litwin’s illustrious career is highlighted by many accomplishments, and he is recognized for establishing the field of health services research and translational population science in urology.
In addition to Dr Litwin, 2 state-of-the-art lectures will be delivered by Drs Rose Khavari and Andre Abreu. Dr Khavari, Professor of Urology at Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas, is a model surgeon scientist with NIH funding, and her contributions in the field of urogynecology are notable for advances in the field of functional neuroimaging platforms. Her unique research program is designed to identify brain regions involved in voiding in patients with neurogenic bladder and cortical stimulation in these areas to modulate and improve bladder emptying.
Dr Andre Abreu is Assistant Professor of Clinical Urology and Radiology at Keck Hospital of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. He has been a leader in the emerging field of focal therapy for management of prostate cancer. His research on high-intensity focal ultrasound and cryoablation helped in developing best practices for management of prostate cancer using focal therapy. Dr Abreu’s seminal contributions have demonstrated that carefully selected patients can achieve favorable oncologic outcomes through focal therapy while still preserving their quality of life, encompassing continence, potency, and overall satisfaction, all with low risk of complications.
Our section meeting will also focus on engagement of advanced practice providers (APPs) with a dedicated session featuring a 2-hour AUA course designed for APPs, as well as additional programming designed for and by APPs from the New England Section.
The residents in the New England–AUA section will have the opportunity to learn about transitioning into clinical practice in sessions with special focus on marketing, billing, and practice building for young urologists.
In collaboration with the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, a multi-institutional team of urologists and medical oncologists including Drs Jennifer Yates, Matthew Mossanen, Kriti Mittal, and Guru Sonpavde from University of Massachusetts, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Advent Health will provide a unique course on contemporary management of nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer including novel therapies with support from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.
The Jeopardy-style resident bowl competition allows our excellent residents to showcase their knowledge—a well-attended session with high level of excitement and engagement by all New England urology residency programs. We are indebted to Dr Adam Hittelman (Yale School of Medicine) for organizing another outstanding educational session for our resident teams.
We look forward to welcoming our members and guests to our next annual meeting, and we are indebted to the Professional Relations and Research Institute staff who have helped us organize another outstanding annual meeting for our group.
