SPECIALTY SOCIETIES Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction Annual Meeting Update
By: J. Quentin Clemens, MD, FACS, MSCI, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor | Posted on: 30 Aug 2023
The SUFU (Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction) winter meeting was held March 7-11, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Grand Hyatt Nashville. The meeting included a mix of basic science talks, thought-provoking poster and podium presentations, insightful discussion during debates and breakout sessions, networking, empowering Zumba, clinical pearls, useful updates, camaraderie, and fun for general urologists as well as specialists. Highlights from the basic science sessions included 2 keynote lectures, “Multi-scale Mapping of the Pelvic Visceral Nervous System: From Spinal Cord to Organ” given by Dr Janet Keast and “Regenerative Medicine” given by Dr Thomas A. Rando, and a panel devoted to the legacy of the late Dr Phil Smith, a model urological surgeon–scientist.
The “clinical” portion of the meeting began with a focus on translational research. This included a keynote lecture by Dr Lynn Stothers, a panel discussion about machine learning in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS), lectures from 4 young investigators, and presentation of the top 10 scored basic science abstracts. In order to facilitate discussion and interactions, the program included an expanded number of breakout sessions with topics that included Burnout/Wellness, Optimization of Advanced Practice Provider Practices in FPMRS, Diversity on the Job, Advanced Urodynamics, Establishing a Successful Academic FPMRS Practice (In Academic Settings and in Non-academic Settings), and Complex Clinical Cases. Some of the more popular plenary panels included management of issues regarding complex abdominal reconstruction, a discussion of the various benign prostatic hyperplasia procedures, how to create inclusive environments for our patients, new developments in neuromodulation, the risks and benefits of medical therapy (β-3 agonists and antimuscarinics) for overactive bladder, and a panel focusing on injection therapy for both female and male stress urinary incontinence.
We had a total of 604 attendees at the meeting this year and, between posters and podiums, 318 and 21 video abstracts were presented. The Table lists the abstract and essay award winners. A hearty congratulations are also due to our individual award winners: Lenny Ackerman, MD, PhD (McGuire-Zimskind Award), Gopal Badlani, MD (Blaivas Lectureship—Lifetime Achievement Award), Greg Bales, MD (Distinguished Service Award), Kathleen Kobashi, MD, MBA (NAFC Continence Care Champion), and Glenn Werneburg, MD, PhD (Diokno-Lapides Award). In addition, Grace Biggs, MD, was announced as our 2024 SUFU Health Policy Scholar. We look forward to seeing you next year in Fort Lauderdale!
