ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDERS Navigating an Early Career in Urology: Insights From the “Advancing Your Career” Advanced Practice Provider Panel Discussion
By: Corinna Hughes, DNP, APRN-CNP, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota | Posted on: 15 Dec 2023
In my current “early” years as an advanced practice provider (APP), I have discovered a multitude of strategies that have significantly shaped my journey within the field of urology. A recent panel discussion aptly titled, “Advancing Your Career: Strategies & Best Practices for APPs Working in Urology” provided a remarkable platform to delve into the perspectives and strategies of advanced practice providers, aimed at enhancing efficiency, enriching clinical experiences, and fostering professional development.
Throughout this insightful discussion, I uncovered several key aspects that have been pivotal in my own career growth. These include the importance of cultivating a support network of reliable mentors, addressing the ever-present imposter syndrome, and granting oneself the grace to evolve into the best version of a health care professional and themselves.
My journey into urologic APP practice began with a strong foundational education, which ultimately led me to pursue the Mayo Clinic APP Urology fellowship in Rochester, Minnesota. This opportunity not only exposed me to the diverse subspecialties within urology but also provided invaluable procedural training and operating room experiences (Figure 1). Furthermore, I had the privilege of learning from exceptional APPs who specialize in various urologic fields, and their mentorship has been instrumental in my development (Figure 2).
With these foundational experiences, I embarked on a path of continuous learning and growth. I actively sought opportunities to share my passion for urology and my experiences with both professional organizations and my local community. I have found great joy in urology, and I’ve been sharing my enthusiasm through social media and by collaborating with fellow APPs, particularly through my involvement with the AUA APP Membership and Education Committee. Presenting at various levels, including local, regional, and national platforms in the field of urology, has been a standout experience for me (Figure 3). It has enriched both my professional network and my personal growth. It’s important to note that the panel discussion I participated in showcased 3 distinct career trajectories, each with different starting points and unique paths of progression. This diversity highlights the fact that not every APP will follow the same career trajectory. However, it also emphasizes that with dedication and determination, individuals can achieve success and personal fulfillment in their urology careers.
In conclusion, the Advancing Your Career panel discussion provided a comprehensive exploration of strategies and insights essential for those in the early stages of their careers in urology. It serves as a testament to the dynamic and diverse opportunities available in this field. This discussion underscores the idea that with the right mindset and support, individuals can carve out their own unique path to success and professional fulfillment.
