SPECIALTY SOCIETIES Dr Brian Ceballos Interviews Dr Jeffrey Lin on Thoughtful Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives

By: Brian Ceballos, BS, MD, University of Alabama at Birmingham | Posted on: 15 Dec 2023

Throughout the 2023 Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons conference, one of the highlight sessions was Dr Jeffrey Lin’s discussion regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in reconstructive urology. He started by shedding light on the statistics and incidence of nonheterosexual men in urology. Dr Lin then emphasized addressing each patient individually on a broader scale when caring for them. Specifically, he discussed the social determinants of health as well as development of resiliency from previous challenges and discrimination the LGBTQ+ community has faced in the past. Adding to this, he discussed that approximately 50% of gay men diagnosed with prostate cancer are single, which adds to the need for practitioners to consider each patient’s social support individually.

Dr Lin concluded by commenting on how improvements to diversity, equity, and inclusion can be made in the future. While many excellent first steps have been achieved, he explained that maintaining minority representation in positions of power would help diversify the outlook of the program and create a more comprehensive community.
