SPECIALTY SOCIETIES The Exciting Future of the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons
By: Diboro L. Kanabolo, MD, University of Washington, Seattle | Posted on: 15 Dec 2023
This video highlights the interview between reconstructive urologist Dr Andy Cohen and 5th-year resident at the University of Washington Dr Diboro Kanabolo. Dr Cohen sheds light on challenges that young urologists may face as they begin careers in reconstruction and provides words of wisdom for new graduates finishing their reconstructive fellowships. As Dr Cohen notes, there are a plethora of opportunities and aspects of a productive career within reconstruction—involving everything from embracing and building on traditional surgeries, including urethroplasties, to emerging areas within the field, such as robotic surgery and transgender health. What must be kept in mind is that there truly are friends around every corner; many initiatives are being developed to make the society smaller, empowering reconstructionists to both serve and be served by their peers as benefactors. The advice Dr Cohen provides is to take advantage of this growing community! The presence of journal clubs and platforms to promote one’s research, such as collaborative support for clinical trial development, can potentially lead to the acceleration of one’s evolution as a researcher. These exciting new developments have led AUANews to provide a deserving spotlight on the active and productive community of young reconstructive urologists.
Dr Cohen is an assistant professor of urology at Johns Hopkins. Moreover, he serves as the director of trauma and reconstructive urologic surgery at the Brady Urological Institute at Bayview Medical Center. He has extensive experience in robotic surgery. He also focuses on issues pertinent to cancer survivorship in men. He has an extensive research portfolio, with particular concentration in outcomes and safety research. Dr Kanabolo is an aspiring reconstructive urologist at the University of Washington. His academic and published interests include diversity, equity, and inclusion; parastomal hernia prevention using applied physics concepts; and outcomes research within robotic surgery.
