GLOBAL STATE OF UROLOGY Enhancing Horizons in Urology: Reflections From AUA’s Visiting Scholars Program
By: Jonatas Pereira, MD, Erasto Gaertner Hospital, Curitiba, Brazil | Posted on: 19 Apr 2024
Taking part in the AUA’s Visiting Scholars Program has been an incredibly rewarding journey, shaping my understanding of urology globally and expanding my professional network.
Among the most memorable experiences was the chance to engage with distinguished figures in urology worldwide, such as Dr Lawrence Klotz and Dr Neal Shore, known affectionately as some of the “The UroStars.” This provided fertile ground for forging partnerships, developing new projects, and gaining insights into diverse urological practices across the globe.
The Annual Meeting, a pivotal part of the exchange, stood out for its expansive scale. The largest urology congress in the world was an excellent opportunity to update myself with the latest news in uro-oncology, an area which I have been working exclusively for the last 7 years. It provided a platform not only for learning from studies and lectures but also for connecting with well-known experts like Dr Steven Chang, Dr Wassim Kassouf, and Dr Karim Touijer (Figure 1). Moreover, I had the privilege of participating in 2 investigator meetings for clinical trials I lead in Brazil, further enriching my experience.
Following the conference in Chicago, I visited the urology department at EVMS in Norfolk, Virginia, where I encountered remarkable professionals, led by the exceptional Dr Kurt McCammon (Figure 2).
Observing the diverse realities within urological departments between countries underscored the importance of adaptability and innovation in health care practices.
One significant takeaway from this experience was learning about the robotic retroperitoneal approach for treating kidney tumors, which I intend to integrate into my practice to enhance patient care.
In Brazil, anticipated technologies like new robotic platforms hold promise, but access to ample resources remains a critical need for advancing patient care in emerging countries. Looking forward, I see significant opportunities for urologists in my career level to engage in sponsored clinical research and drive advancements in the field.
Interacting with American urologists profoundly influenced my perspective on urology and global medicine, highlighting the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge. Participation in the program has opened doors to potential leadership roles within my national society, showcasing the value of such initiatives.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Drs Kurt and Carol McCammon, Robert Given, Michael Williams, and John Malcolm, and resident Brian Vaught for their warm welcome and hospitality during my visit to Norfolk. Their support made me feel at home and comfortable throughout my stay (Figures 3 and 4).
Another notable aspect is the excellent support from AUA staff during the whole process. I was assisted and well informed during every step of the trip. I would also like to thank Marielle Marktanner and Abigail Roth. who helped me in countless ways.
To aspiring scholars, I strongly encourage seizing the opportunity for a transformative journey of learning and collaboration. The program not only fosters professional growth but also opens doors to making contacts and friends around the world.
In conclusion, the AUA’s Visiting Scholars Program has been pivotal in broadening my horizons in urology. I am grateful to the AUA for this enriching opportunity and look forward to contributing further to the advancement of urological practices in Brazil (Figure 5).
