SPECIALTY SOCIETIES Recap of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America 24th Annual Fall Scientific Meeting

By: Tobias S. Köhler, MD, MPH, Sexual Medicine Society of North America President Elect, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota | Posted on: 21 Feb 2024

The 24th Annual Fall Scientific Meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) occurred in San Diego, California, on November 16 to 19, 2023. The program schedule, organized by Dr Lawrence Jenkins, capped off a tremendous year of growth for the organization. As discussed in the annual business meeting, SMSNA membership grew by 11% this year, with a new total membership of 1433. This was largely due to the infusion of new medical students, residents, and advanced practice provider (APP) members. Overall, the meeting had 910 registrants and 414 abstracts submitted.

Premeeting educational courses were very successful. The courses included the first-ever masculizing genital gender affirming surgery for the transgender patient cadaver and didactic hands-on course through collaboration of SMSNA and course organizer Dr Maurice Garcia of Cedars Sinai. Other premeeting courses included shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction, a basic science symposium on the history of sexual medicine research for on-demand erectile function, benign prostatic hyperplasia surgical options to spare sexual function, andrology best practices in evaluation and management, and a fundamentals course in women’s sexual health organized by the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health. The final premeeting symposium covered a 2-part fellowship to practice seminar. It was a special year for the SMSNA fellows as earlier in the year, 28 of the 31 fellows attended a 3-day training bootcamp in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The same fellows will be invited back to Minnesota in 2024, along with the 2024 SMSNA fellow class. The SMSNA fellows were prominently featured as moderators and speakers in the program. The 2022 fellows were awarded their certificates of completion in the opening ceremonies.

Dr Mohit Khera started the official meeting with the presidential address and moderated the first-ever SMSNA talent show, which featured 6 acts and included musical performances, comedy, and poetry recitation. Many attendees began furiously planning to display their talents at the 2024 meeting. The SMSNA Annual Meeting has a longstanding tradition of camaraderie and networking. The 2023 meeting was no exception, including the welcome reception, mental health provider mixer, young clinicians mixer, SMSNA Foundation night, and the APP networking session. In its inaugural year, APPs were able to earn an SMSNA APP sexual medicine certification via completion of 12 hours of online didactics premeeting and a 4-hour hands-on training session, which occurred on day 3 of the meeting. SMSNA plans to offer the same opportunity to APPs in 2024.

Other unique offerings at the 2023 meeting included a Spanish session on men’s health surgery; a diversity, equity, and inclusion mentoring session that paired SMSNA members in practice to medical students, residents, and fellows interested in sexual medicine; and an unusual and interesting case podium session. All 3 novel events will be repeated in 2024 as they were very well received. Select residents were able to participate in a terrific co-organized SMSNA and Society for Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons resident education course and cadaver lab. Special thanks to Status Plus, the AUA, the American Board of Urology, and all those who volunteered to be able to seamlessly administer the resident in-service exam to more than 40 participants.

The lifeblood of the SMSNA meeting is high-quality science and collegial discussion and debate across the spectrum of sexual health categories. SMSNA sister organizations that presented sessions included the International Society of Sexual Medicine, European Society of Sexual Medicine, and Society of Latin American Sexual Medicine. Scientific sessions featured surgical sexual medicine including penile implants and Peyronie’s disease, female sexual function, oncosexology, LGBTQ+, fertility and reproductive health, voiding dysfunction, priapism, reconstruction, hormones, penile size, the connection between erectile dysfunction and heart disease, gender-affirming surgery, and many others. Abstracts included basic science, video sessions, podium sessions, and 23 moderated e-poster sessions that covered the gamut of modern sexual medicine science. Indeed, the 2023 SMSNA was a terrific success and we cannot thank our sponsors, the planning committee, and Status Plus enough! See you next at the SMSNA session at the AUA Annual Meeting on May 3, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, and the next SMSNA Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, from October 17 to 20, 2024.
