Study Need and Importance

The importance of improving diversity in our workforce is a matter of great clinical relevance. Studies have demonstrated that a diverse physician workforce results in improved health outcomes and patient satisfaction. The AUA recognizes a culturally aware and diverse membership is integral to the evolution and growth of the organization, as well as to the specialty of urology. This was evident at the AUA2023 Annual Meeting with inaugural programming dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I).

What We Found

Several themes emerged from work presented in various DE&I sessions including Increasing Representation Pipeline and Mentorship, Equity and Inclusion, Gender Equity, LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual) Representation, and Rural Representation and Disparities.

The sessions highlighted these themes demonstrating significant interest from the urological community regarding ongoing needs and areas for improvement. Women and non-White urologists are more likely to experience differential treatment and burnout, and be underrepresented on guideline panels. For our LGBTQIA+ patients, knowledge about and attitudes toward the LGBTQIA+ community are key factors for providing high-quality, patient-centered, and respectful care.

Limitations and Interpretation for Patient Care

It has been nearly 1 year since the AUA DE&I Task Force published its recommendations. Work presented at AUA2023 demonstrates both the urgent ongoing need and the incremental progress made in addressing the Task Force’s recommendations. Having systematic and dedicated increasing representation in urology programming raises awareness of pressing issues and marks an evolution toward a more inclusive and diverse urological community.
