SPECIALTY SOCIETIES Interview With the AUA Secretaries at the 2023 Urological Association of Asia Congress in Dubai
By: Omer A. Raheem, MD, MSc, MCh (Urol), MRCS, University of Chicago Medicine, Illinois | Posted on: 19 Jan 2024
Building on the AUA mission to promote the highest standards of urological clinical care through education and research across the globe, the AUA has made significant efforts and strides in developing strong relationships with different international societies such as the Urology Association of Asia (UAA) Annual Congress and made it a priority commitment to attend the UAA annual meeting held between September 28 to October 1, 2023, at Conrad Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Figure 1).
The UAA Annual Meeting was a huge success with over 3000 urologist attendees from different parts of Asia and the world. The AUA’s faculty participated in the UAA Annual Meeting and provided lectures on the UAA plenary sessions and shared their expertise in both urologic care and research. In addition, the AUA faculty discussed the most up-to-date research and advanced development and innovations.
One of the most impactful highlights of the UAA Annual Meeting in Dubai was the joint UAA-AUA program, Asian Urology Resident’s Course, on September 27, 2023 (Figures 2 and 3). The Asian Urology Resident’s Course is a 3-day program with AUA having 1 day delivered by AUA leaders and faculty including Dr David Penson—AUA secretary; Dr Aseem Shukla—AUA associate secretary, Asia and Australia; Dr Jose Karam—AUA associate secretary, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; Dr Nicole Miller—AUA lecturer; and Dr Omer Raheem—AUA lecturer. This course was the most interactive, dynamic, well-attended, and well-received session by over 100 urology residents from around Asian countries. “Indeed, the AUA-led AURC courses is an example of many international resident courses and educational resources that our international resident members can access and gain by joining the AUA as an ‘international members’ that ultimately aim to enhance their urologic education and knowledge as they ultimately transition into their future practices across the globe,” AUA secretaries state.
