We are so pleased to have this opportunity, on behalf of the residents and fellows at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), to honor Residency Program Director, mentor, and friend Dr Lindsay Hampson, the winner of the 2024 AUA Residents and Fellows Outstanding Educator Award. Dr Hampson’s titles and accolades are vast, and she is well-known in the national and international urologic community for her academic achievements and her commitment to mentorship, teaching, and innovation. She is associate professor of urology, Frank Hinman, Jr, MD Endowed Professor in Urologic Education, Associate Chair of Education, Co-Director of the UCSF Lifetime Congenital Urology Program, and recently elected board member of the Society of Women in Urology. She was nominated by the residents and fellows for her commitment to quality teaching in the OR, clinic, and inpatient services, innovation in education, individualized mentorship, and dedication to resident well-being.

During her time as assistant program director and program director, she has already transformed urology education in many ways not just at our institution, but internationally. During the COVID pandemic, she organized an online multi-institutional collaboration dedicated to continuing resident education, the Urology Collaborative Online Video Didactics (COViD) lecture series using Zoom. Furthermore, she has completely transformed our Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference from a traditional model into an engaging platform that encourages open dialogue and idea exchange. Dr Hampson’s innovative approach has revolutionized this forum into a space where residents feel empowered to share insights, contribute ideas, and actively participate in shaping their learning experiences. She is always teaching and mentoring in each day-to-day interaction. We cherish our operating room time with her, and always leave the day feeling like we have grown as a surgeon.

We feel incredibly supported by Dr Hampson, who consistently carves out valuable time within her demanding schedule to engage with trainees on an individual basis. Her commitment to one-on-one meetings fosters an environment of trust and personal growth. Despite her myriad responsibilities, she prioritizes these interactions, offering guidance, support, and tailored mentorship to each trainee. She is a great listener, and her willingness to listen and implement suggestions has resulted in tangible enhancements to our educational program that she implements in a rolling and dynamic fashion. Her unwavering commitment to trainee wellness is unparalleled. In a short time, she has spearheaded initiatives that prioritize the holistic well-being of our trainees, such as stretch and release sessions, free access to a wellness app, a dedicated sleep workshop, and constant attention to physical and mental wellness. Furthermore, her establishment of “mentor colleges” has cultivated a supportive environment where trainees interact and share experiences in a personalized setting with various attendings, fostering camaraderie and professional and leadership development.

In summary, we are thrilled that Dr Hampson’s efforts are being recognized with this award, reflecting the unanimous sentiment of the residents and fellows at UCSF Urology. We are unified in our admiration and respect for Dr Lindsay Hampson’s exceptional contributions as an educator, mentor, and transformative leader in our field. No one is more deserving than she.
