From the Urology Care Foundation™ Must-Have Resources for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

By: Harris M. Nagler, MD, FACS, President, Urology Care Foundation™ | Posted on: 13 Sep 2024

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and the Urology Care Foundation™ is helping people learn about prostate cancer and supporting those affected. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be nearly 300,000 new cases of prostate cancer in 2024, making it the second most common cancer among men. As a practicing urologist, you will almost certainly make the diagnosis of prostate cancer or treat someone with prostate cancer in the upcoming year.

We want to ensure we can provide you and your patients with helpful tools. In September 2023, the Urology Care Foundation™ website had over 986,000 page views, and our Prostate Cancer Awareness Month social media posts and YouTube videos garnered over 19,000 views. It is clear that patients and caregivers seek out our resources and find them helpful and valuable.

We hope you are familiar with our Prostate Cancer Info Center, which provides free patient education resources on the types of prostate cancer, treatment options, life after a prostate cancer diagnosis, and more. In the Info Center, you’ll find the Navigating Prostate Cancer special issue of UrologyHealth extra, fact sheets, patient guides, Care Blogs, podcasts, a Living Healthy Cookbook, and the Prostate Care Playbook, all of which can be downloaded and shared with patients and caregivers. Additionally, we have created information bundles that group materials from various sources, making it easier for patients to obtain relevant information. Some of our most popular bundles include Advanced Prostate Cancer Basics, African American Men’s Health, Hormone Sensitive Prostate Cancer, Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) for Prostate Cancer, and Early-Stage Prostate Cancer Basics.

Recognizing that all your patients may not be fluent in English, many of our materials are available in other languages. We have a large number of Spanish prostate cancer materials including Lista de verificación para hombres Qué deben saber loshombres latinos (Men’s Checklist: What Latino Men Should Know Fact Sheet), Cáncer de próstata estadio temprano: Lo que usted debe saber (Early-Stage Prostate Cancer—What You Should Know Fact Sheet), Guía para pacientes con cancer de próstata avanzado (Advanced Prostate Cancer Patient Guide), and Cáncer de próstata avanzado: Lo que usted debería saber (Advanced Prostate Cancer: What You Should Know Fact Sheet). Visit our Spanish Resource Center for all of our Spanish offerings.

We want to make your work easier. This year, we’re excited to announce we are adding a digital toolkit of infographics and social media posts for urologists and urology practices to include on your websites and social media channels. We have multiple infographics depicting basic statistics about prostate cancer (eg, prevalence), screening options such as PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams, and when patients should start talking to their doctors. We also have posts explaining the risk factors for prostate cancer: age, family history, and African American ethnicity, as well as infographics highlighting our prostate cancer resources and directing viewers to our Info Center. Along with the graphics, the toolkit also comes with sample captions for social media. All of these assets are free and available to download now.

We are excited to see the growth in our digital footprint and are working to find new ways to share this vital information. Whether you use our toolkit posts or not, be sure to follow along and join the conversation using #ProstateCancerMonth.

The Urology Care Foundation™ is here to help you bring awareness to prostate cancer risk as well as screening and treatment options and to help your patients navigate a prostate cancer diagnosis.
